How Does CBD Oil Help With Anxiety?


Stress and anxiety are a common problem, now more than ever, thanks in part to all the things that we come across, in our everyday lives. From pandemic scares to job related tasks, nearly anything we do can add to the stress and anxiety we feel. It isn’t always a bad thing, but when it is constant, it can be detrimental to our health. However, there are ways we can tackle that, and one of them is by taking CBD oil. You’ve probably heard of CBD oil, or at least seen the promotional materials for it, but what is it, and how does it help with anxiety?

What Is CBD?

If you’ve come across the acronym CBD, you’ll probably know that it’s associated with cannabis. Don’t worry, it’s legal in many countries, including the USA, UK, and most of Europe. CBD is a form of cannabis, called cannabidiol, and is cultivated from a certain species of hemp that many governments have only recently approved of. This is because it doesn’t impair judgement or induce intoxication or “highs” like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) does, which is the more illegal form of cannabis (Healthline).

How Does CBD Oil Help With Anxiety?

CBD has many uses, and one of them is to treat anxiety. With its antidepressant properties, it helps anxiety as well, since it reacts with receptors in the central nervous system that triggers serotonin release (Healthline). Essentially, what that means is that it reacts with receptors in your central nervous system, which tricks your brain into releasing serotonin, which is essentially your “happy” emotion in chemical form. That’s why it can help with stress and anxiety.

In fact, serotonin is an essential part of your mental health, and the lower the level of serotonin, the more likely you’ll experience anxiety and depression. That’s why many therapists and medical professionals prescribe CBD and other SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).

Is It Scientifically Proven?

Many studies have shown how CBD can help with anxiety and depression. In fact the National Institute On Drug Abuse has claimed that CBD does help with reducing stress levels in animals like rats (NIDA, 2015). With this, they’ve proven that even for general anxiety or generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), CBD can help.

There have also been studies on the effects of CBD on other forms of anxiety, like PTSD or social anxiety disorder (SAD). These studies included a placebo, where participants were given 400mgs of one or the other, and as a result, those who received CBD experienced an overall reduction in anxiety levels (Sage Journals, 2010).

How Much Can I Take?

If you’re looking to start taking CBD for anxiety, it really depends on how much your body can take. Before you start, consult your doctor. They’ll be able to tell since they know your medical history, and whether your body is able to take the effects of CBD oil.

Of course, there are commercially available products that you can try, but remember to always read the label and the instructions, so you don’t go overboard. There are a few side effects to taking CBD, so overdosing on the oil may exacerbate these symptoms.

What Are The Side Effects?

Usually, the side effects of CBD are minor, especially when you take the correct dosage. However, you may experience things like diarrhoea, fatigue, a change in appetite or a change in weight. Not only that, but if you are taking other medication, be cautious about what you’re taking, and whether it will affect your intake of CBD.

Some medications, like blood thinners can be harmful, if you take CBD as well, as they both affect enzymes that are essential to drug metabolism (Healthline). Not only that but there have been studies where mice were force-fed extremely high doses of CBD, and as a result their liver toxicity increased.

So, if you’re already taking prescribed medication, always check with your doctor first, whether your medication will interact badly with CBD, and instead try to find an alternative that will do the same, if not a similar job. If you must stop your medication, then this could also exacerbate the side effects of CBD, or add to them, since you’ll most likely experience withdrawal symptoms at the same time. You may feel more irritable, dizziness, nausea and even fogginess. That’s why you should always consult your doctor, if you are thinking about taking CBD Oil.

Is CBD Oil Safe?

For the most part, CBD Oil is considered safe, but only if taking according to recommended doses. It can help with a range of different ailments and mental health issues, and can reduce stress, especially if you’re placed in a high-stress situation, or an anxiety inducing situation. In fact, taking at the very least 100mg of CBD Oil every day can help with insomnia as well, as it contains anti-inflammatory properties.

There are many benefits to CBD Oil, and you may be able to find it in your local pharmacy, but remember, there may be a limit to how much you can buy. Sometimes, you may be asked to show a licence or a prescription from your doctor, to buy it.

You should also consider taking it with food, in case you do experience more extreme symptoms or side effects. However, don’t take any food or drink that contain grapefruit, as they too affect the same enzymes as CBD.

On the whole, if you’re unsure about whether you should or shouldn’t buy CBD Oil, speak to your doctor first. Make sure that your medication doesn’t react badly with it, and always take the recommended doses, or less, if you think your body may not be able to handle so much of it. After all, it is still a contentious drug.
